Australians with a fascination for ancient Turkey and a love of yacht cruising can satisfy both passions on expeditions being offered by Peter Sommer Travels to some of the most remarkable historic sites in the Mediterranean.
The UK-based archaeological tour specialist has already launched its 2015 season of cruises, using traditional Turkish sailboats called gulets fitted out to provide high level comfort for guests.
There are 12 different expeditions to choose from, starting now (late April) and continuing through to mid-October. Some early season trips are repeated later. Most go for eight days, but some extend to 15 days, with prices starting at 1995GBP (approx $A3872 at current exchange rates) per person, twin share.
Each cruise will skirt Turkey’s south-west coast, at a leisurely pace, visiting ancient ruins, unspoilt coves and lovely old villages. The gulets vary in size and accommodate between eight and 24 guests in comfortable cabins.
The expedition guides have been chosen from the company’s large team of experts with academic backgrounds in history, art and archaeology. Their informed commentary will add an educational component to packages that also include opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, walking treks and enjoying the region’s superb food and wine.
The company’s range of 2015 gulet cruises in Turkey can be seen in detail, complete with dates, at petersommer.com. The tours are:

The company is headed by archaeologist and documentary maker Peter Sommer, who in 1994 walked 3200km across Turkey, retracing the route of Alexander the Great. He later worked on a BBC documentary, In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, and created a 19-day tour of the same name, cited by National Geographic Traveller as one of the world’s 10 best educational holidays.
“I will be leading a one-week gulet trip in Turkey – Walking and Cruising the Carian Coast,” says Peter. “It includes several fantastic sites and wonderful walks from the recently opened Carian Trail.”
